Inverter Review: Adventure Curated

Inverter Review: Adventure Curated

Who

Mike Collister is the principle of Adventure Curated, a team who share a passion for the great outdoors, adventure and the environment. Their mission is to inspire adventure and to protect the wild. Mike is a self-described nomad who is lucky enough to spend more time on the road exploring our great country than he does in the office.

In this day and age, we rely on technology more than ever; managing a business whilst on the road isn't easy. You need to be prepared and organised especially when technology plays such an integral role in the success of the business.

REDARC's 700W Pure Sine Wave Inverter is designed to power your 240-volt equipment when on the road; it delivers smooth and reliable power to your appliances whilst keeping them safe against short-circuit and overheating. Seeing as Mike relies on his equipment being good to go, often in remote locations, we thought he'd be the perfect candidate to test and review REDARC's Pure Sine Wave Inverter.

The Set Up

Mike drives a 120 Series Toyota Prado – it’s a serious unit designed for touring to those unique and remote locations. His batteries are well looked after with our BCDC1225 dual battery charger keeping the auxiliary battery charged and a 150W Solar Blanket SunPower Cells topping up charge as needed.

For the average Joe a 12V setup will keep the essentials charged. However, if you're relying on camera batteries, UHF handhelds, satellite phones, laptops and more to be correctly charged it just doesn’t quite cut it. For this reason, Mike uses a Pure Sine Wave Inverter.

“We use a 700W unit as although our equipment isn’t too power hungry we like to be able to make the most of the time when power is plentiful on the road to charge multiple items at once.”  says Mike.

The Install

In Mike’s case, the large amount of charge needed requires an efficient setup to ensure his gadgets charge in optimal time. To achieve this Mike mounted the inverter under the driver’s seat, as close to the supplying battery as possible. From the inverter Mike runs a 240V extension cord to a power board in the back to charge all his gear and keep them out of the way.

Speaking of his setup, Mike says, “We’ve installed a power board with wide spacing to accept our varied adapters, our camera battery chargers are fixed in place and the rest are bagged neatly nearby.” He added, “It’s all really easy and I can quickly trade the flat batteries in my camera bag for fresh ones”.

The Benefits

The number one benefit that the Pure Sine Wave Inverter brought to Mike’s campsite was the reliability and reassurance that his gear could be charged correctly. One of the risks of charging your appliance off your vehicle’s 12V system is that it can be unreliable and increase the possibility of damage.

Mike says, “Quality inverters produce pure sine waves which are much safer for valuable electronics. This unit also has overload and short circuit protection as well as a cooling fan that kicks in when needed. It’s comforting to know my gear won’t be damaged if the inverter is damaged by dirt or water.”

When setting up camp, Mike aims to keep the inverter switched off, to allow his fridge to run on the 12V – frugally sipping on the auxiliary battery when need be, also topping it up when need be via a portable solar panel. If a quick boost of charge is needed to a phone or camera battery he aims to do it during the day when the sun is out.

The Verdict

Mike would recommend a REDARC Pure Sine Wave Inverter as they make life on the road easier. The risk of damaging his expensive electrical equipment through his 12V system is not worth it.

“The REDARC Pure Sine Wave Inverter brings us quality power and 700 watts of it – which means I can charge all my gear during sunlight or driving hours.”

Mike recommends REDARC products to his friends and the rest of the team at Adventure Curated as they are reliable in rugged conditions and because they stand the test of time in terms of durability.

In his own words “Whatever needs powering inverters can certainly do the job, and for many, they will make life on the road that little bit easier.”
