In our final edition of the 'Getting to Know' series, we speak to Joel Maizey, Areas Sales Manager of Queensland. Joel has been with REDARC since mid-2015 and is tasked with servicing our customers and clients in the Sunshine State.
Joel's REDARC Hilux covers a lot of ground and can be seen anywhere from the Gold Coast to Toowoomba to Cairns at any time of the year. When he's not on the road you can find him with his family or soaking in the rays on one of Queensland's many beaches.
What is your working background/what were you doing before you joined REDARC?
I did my trade as an Electrical Fitter in a small AC motor and generator rewinding shop on the Gold Coast. After completing my trade I moved on to Riviera, the luxury boat manufacturer where I specialised in high and low voltage installations. This entailed installing and commissioning sophisticated marine navigational electronics as well as testing and maintenance. After 10 years at Riviera I decided it was time for a change and I had my sights locked on the mining industry. I was able to secure a position at Hastings Deering CAT for 12 months carrying out mine spec fitouts on everything from D10 –D11 dozers to wheel loaders and haul trucks. I then found myself in sales at a local auto electrical distributor for 2 years before I found my home here at REDARC.
Talk us through what an average day at REDARC consists of?
The Area Sales Manager for Queensland is quite a diverse role, most days are spent with customers on many levels from corporate meetings with distributors to working with manufacturers to optimise their vehicles and visiting auto electricians, 4x4 shops and trade events and shows.

What is the best thing about working at REDARC?
There are a few things. The culture of the company is amazing and it’s just like an extended family. Whilst the product and support are second to none. It’s also amazing how many people have been touched by REDARC – I have met people in the street that often know somebody who has the power of REDARC or even been powered by our products themselves.
What is your favorite REDARC product and why?
The BCDC1240D DC to DC In-vehicle dual battery charger is a powerhouse and with dual input charging it future proofs vehicles when looking to upgrade to lithium batteries. Plus, with the dual input, I am maximising my solar input at all times.
What is your dream rig? And what gadgets would you put in it?
Now that’s a long list, if money was no object you would see me on my super yacht cruising the world.
When you’re out meeting people on the road and they ask what REDARC product they need, what do you tell them?
Firstly I listen to what they want to achieve with their electrical needs and wants, then we can tailor a custom setup for their requirements.
What is your favorite travel destination in Australia?
My favorite would be Moreton Island. It’s such a beautiful place and not as crowded as Fraser Island, and still only an hour from Brisbane. Moreton has it all, beautiful beaches, great fishing and even snorkeling the wrecks with the family.

Tell us about your REDARC Hilux, What products do you have in it and why are they important?
In the back, we have The Manager30 Battery Management System to power the ARB 60 litre fridge and 2000w Pure Sine Wave Inverter for the higher loads such as the vacuum when I need to clean up the rig after a weeklong trip or power up the coffee pod machine between meetings. Fixed to the roof is a 150w fixed solar panel that makes the system pretty much self-sufficient. Storing all that good power is a Revolution 100Ah lithium battery.
From the driver’s seat, we have two 52mm Gauges, a boost/EGT gauge as well as an oil pressure /temperature in a custom pod thanks to HN Customs to monitor engine vitals. Then there’s a Strike phone cradle which keeps all my calls legal too. A Thinkware dash cam, because you never know when you might need it and a HEMA HX-1 navigator to stop me getting lost in the bush or helping find the address of my next meeting.
Both battery systems are monitored by the RF Battery Monitor Kit by Hummingbird and can monitor up to 4 batteries wirelessly. As well as their GPS Speed Alert with “track day mode” to keep me on the right side of the law.
The vehicle has also been extensively modified by ARB with bar work and suspension, drawers, canopy, racks, long range fuel tank, larger wheels and all terrain tyres to make it a real go anywhere vehicle and the ultimate tourer. All internals remain stock.

Who is your hero?
My hero is my fiancé Agnes, she’s the mother of our two children Eric and Mark, and believe me that in itself is a tough gig! I am constantly overwhelmed with her ability to look after me and the kids so passionately and to also run a household like clockwork.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
On a self-sufficient island with my family and my boat – I’m thinking Bora-Bora.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are getting into the outdoors, anything to do with boating, camping or fishing and I’ll be there. Rolling the swags out at motocross mountain with the bikes or over on Straddie out of the boat. Motorcycling is also a passion of mine and I recently got a new KTM 300 EXC that I hope will treat me well and not break my bones.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
First, I would have to say my partner makes the best Hungarian food, but the one meal would be her Lasagne – it’s the best!
